Your Word Is A Lamp To My Feet

In the Middle East temperatures can often soar beyond 50 degrees during summer. It is only very recently that people can travel during the heat of summer in air conditioned cars and buses. In ancient times when the scriptures were written groups of people would travel in the cool of the night. Just as there was no air conditioning, lighting was also limited. Travelers would be reliant on the use of lamps to find their way along paths and roads. Unless the moon was particularly bright a traveler could only see a few meters in front of them. The purpose of the lamp was to illuminate the next step for the group and where to place their feet on the road. As you are aware the theme of this year is, “Bit by Bit, Step by Step, Inch by Inch.” We are encouraging students to focus on the next step and worry less about the end goal.
When we understand how people traveled in groups at night in biblical times the following verse makes more sense. “Your WORD is a lamp unto my feet, and a light for my path” Psalm 119:105. One of the great benefits of modern society is that we can travel great distances quickly and in very comfortable surroundings. However, in terms of finding hope, purpose, and direction in the modern world, the verse from Psalms reminds us that calling on God to guide and direct our steps is just as relevant today as it was in ancient times. As we move forward into 2020 let us all take a moment to ask if the next step we take is guided by God and his calling upon our life or are we trying to do it on our own. When we surrender to the guidance of God we will indeed experience a great sense of peace and security.
During the first weeks of Term 1, I have been tying the “Inch by Inch” theme to last year’s theme of “Together we are Stronger.” More simply, I am emphasizing the power of unity. When I add up students, staff, parents, and guardians, I estimate that as Campus Principal I have oversight of over 2000 people. It is tremendously exciting to consider the potential of that many people taking little steps forward in a united fashion every day. 2000 inches in a day is nearly 51 meters. Over a year that equates to 186 km. That is a lot of progress! It is all dependent on our community heading in the same direction, united and directed by God’s Word.
The Apostle Paul issued a similar challenge to the Corinthian Church, “I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ that all of you agree with one another in what you say and there be no divisions among you, but that you'll be perfectly united in mind and thought.”
It has been a wonderfully positive start to the year and I pray that 2020 will be Flinders finest year thus far in our journey as a Christian Community.
