Sport at Traralgon
Physical activity is vital to concentration, and the cognitive and emotional well being of children. For this reason we will encourage your child to participate actively in a wide range of sporting activities throughout their school career, from Prep through to Year 12. They will take part in a gymnastics program from Prep to Year 2 and receive swimming lessons between Prep and Year 6.
Our sports program complements the physical education component of the curriculum. Organised training sessions take place at lunchtimes and before and after school, as teams prepare for the challenge of inter-school competitions.
Team sports encourage collaboration, commitment, empathy, grace in winning and losing, and enjoyment.
Each year we hold the following House competitions, and we encourage all students to participate.
- Traralgon campus has a variety of House activities, including athletics, swimming, cross country and round robin events, to give all students the opportunity to participate at a competitive or fun level. We also encourage students with less interest in sport to participate in the role of officials and in photographing the events.
- Flinders also provides student leadership opportunities such as College Sports Captain (Year 12), House Captains and House Vice Captains.
- Flinders has four houses: Acacia (yellow), Epacris (red), Hovea (blue), Correa (green).
At Traralgon campus we offer coaching programs in the following sports:
- Clay target shooting
Our teams enter competitions organised by local sporting associations, and compete regularly with other independent and government schools.
External sporting opportunities
Flinders Christian Community College – Traralgon campus is a member of SSV in both Primary and Secondary levels. Our Primary school is a member of the Traralgon District Association and our Secondary school is a member of the Wellington Division.
We are proud of our ‘Team Flinders’ fun run team, who recently won a ‘Harriers’ award for third highest staff and students entry in the 2015 Traralgon fun run. The team encourages staff, students and parents to join together to have fun, get fit and participate in local events to support local charities.
In 2013 we formed a clay target shooting team at the Traralgon campus and it has gone from strength to strength. Currently we have seven members who compete in a variety of shooting disciplines. Competitions are held in Sale, Morwell, Frankston and Lilydale.
Your child will also have the opportunity to participate in table tennis, badminton, soccer, netball, basketball, shooting, athletics, swimming, orienteering and ultimate Frisbee.
We have many netball and basketball teams currently entered in competitions organised by local sporting associations. They compete regularly with other Independent and Government schools.
