Secondary
Our focus: building a generation of leaders with Christian character and integrity who are purpose orientated and technologically proficient.
Our desire: that our students will strive to achieve and be inspired to take their learning into a career path that will enable and encourage them to use their God given potential to make valuable contributions to our nation.
We hope that as students journey through life, they will in their own time, whether at Flinders College or elsewhere, come to appreciate and understand that there is a God who loves and cares for them.
Years 7-9
Year Level Coordinators assist Primary students to make the many personal and social adjustments to the Secondary style of schooling, particularly in regard to their academic progress and friendship groups. Entry into Secondary school is a time of transition from a Primary setting, with one core teacher to many core teachers as well as several Elective teachers. This is a big adjustment for many students, boys and girls alike.
Core subjects include English, Mathematics, Bible Studies, History, Geography, Science, LOTE and Physical Education. We also offer an extensive Elective program consisting of subjects such as; Visual Communication and Design, Plastics, Art, Music, Food and Technology, Textile Craft, Drama, Computer Studies, Media Studies to name but a few (subjects may vary at different Campuses)
At our Carrum Downs campus, Year 7 and Year 8 students undertake specific multidisciplinary programs as an introduction to a more intensive multidisciplinary study at Year 9 level. Year 7 students engage in the Wisdom of the Ancients Program whilst Year 8 students undertake Space Studies.
Year 9 students (Carrum Downs & Tyabb Campuses) enjoy an integrated study called Marine Studies which centres on the "Titanic Experience". Students study the history, the geography, the science, the mathematics and the story behind the sinking of the Titanic. Marine Studies also offers a range of off campus activities designed to foster a deeper understanding of the marine environment. These activities include surfing, kayaking, sailing, small boat handling, dolphin/seal/reef swimming, keel boats and square rigger sailing.
Resiliency Days are conducted during the year for students in Years 7, 8 and 9 which are designed to enable students to learn coping skills to deal better with disappointment and set backs and also to make better choices in their lives. Senior students are on hand through the day to assist staff to deliver these very effective programs.
Year 10
Our Year 10 program is focused on building a generation of leaders with Christian character and integrity who are purpose orientated and technologically proficient. Our Senior School will provide many opportunities for each student to be challenged and developed. Each of them has excellent value and will contribute to a student’s personal and academic development. Students are encouraged to actively participate and contribute to the life of our school.
The philosophy of education at Flinders Christian Community College for the Year 10 students is that the school should provide a rich, useful, stimulating and enjoyable educational experience, one that provides for the development of their skills and abilities.
It has therefore been the intention to provide options to students that make available all tertiary pathways. The initiatives introduced are in line with the latest Australian National "Statements and Profiles" and the "Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS)". The curriculum at Flinders Christian Community College has been developed to meet the criteria put forward by these educational bodies, with a Christian context.
The program has been designed to accommodate the three VELS strands, through our core and expanded elective program, and to allow Year 10 students to accelerate and undertake studies in a Year 11 subject, either VCE or VET.
VELS:
Schools across Victoria organise their curriculum locally to suit the needs of their students. This organisation is done through the overarching structure of VELS. This structure is based on three components of curriculum:
- The process of physical, personal and social development and growth.
- The branches of learning reflecting the traditional disciplines.
- The interdisciplinary capacities needed for effective functioning within and beyond the school.
These components become the three core strands; Physical, Personal and Social Learning, Discipline Based Learning and Interdisciplinary Learning.
The Year 10 program offered by FCCC is VELS compliant. We recognise and implement throughout our program what the VCAA and the College agree are ‘Essential Learnings’. This is implemented at the College through a curriculum that has both core and elective components.
The Core Program:
English, Mathematics and Bible studies are our core program. All students will be involved in these three subjects, as well as Chapel and Homegroup.
The Elective Program:
The Year 10 program is based on current educational research advocating the provision of a more personalised student centred approach to developing a program of studies. The College is empowering Year 10 students to take much more control of their own programs of study.
At the Year 10 level we encourage students to expand their horizons and to explore a range of subject options, putting together a learning plan that best suits their needs.
Years 11 and 12
Year 11 and 12 will provide many opportunities for each student to be challenged and developed. All of our camps, excursions, and extra curricular activities are designed to contribute to a student’s personal and academic development. Students are encouraged to actively participate and contribute to the life of our school community.
