South East Water
primary girls at Carrum Downs

In 2006 Flinders Christian Community College, Carrum Downs entered a partnership with South East Water to develop an innovative irrigation system which combines recycled water and stormwater. Recycled water is pumped 1.5km from the South Eastern Pipeline to the school. This is then mixed with stormwater that is harvested from the roof of ‘F Block’ and is used to irrigate the sports grounds.

It is estimated that FCCC Carrum Downs will cut its water use by 30 million litres each year and potentially up to 50 million litres of water when extra sporting facilities are developed. The project will assist the Victorian Government to reach its target of recycling 20 per cent of Melbourne’s treated wastewater by 2010.

In addition to the irrigation of the sports facilities and other grassed areas, we are implementing curriculum activities focusing on protection, enhancement and sustainability of the Australian environment. This includes a predictive digital weather station on the grounds which will alert staff to shut down the irrigation system if the winds are high or rain is coming. The weather station is incorporated into the College’s agricultural studies.
