Music
The Music Department at Flinders Christian Community College offers a creative and exciting classroom music curriculum and an extensive instrumental music and ensemble programme. Research shows that playing a musical instrument is a valuable extension to your primary and secondary student's education. To quote from Directions in Education, Vol 14 No 3, 12th August 2005, 'Music and a Healthy Start':
'Research suggests that early music experience is crucial in developing young children's sense of identity, and makes a significant contribution to their general health and wellbeing. This research indicates that, whilst music exposure (music listening) is important, it is through active music participation that benefits most readily accrue for young children (Merc., 11/7/05). Active engagement in music through singing, moving, playing instruments and listening, contributes to a healthy beginning to life, with enduring effects for learners.'
The College is blessed to enjoy the services of many talented and highly qualified classroom and instrumental music teachers, who tutor our students on a wide range of instruments. In addition, we endeavour to provide all students with the opportunity to perform in ensembles and offer public performance opportunities throughout the year to enhance students' musical experience.
Our Senior Concert Band, Strings Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble and 'Thump' (percussion ensemble) are regularly invited to perform in the community, as well as providing the music for our bi-ennial College musicals at the Tyabb campus. Our inter-campus Concert Bands won two prestigious awards at the Melbourne School Bands Festival, 2005. The College also provides full orchestral performance opportunities for special events, such as the annual Presentation Night at our three campuses.
