Agricultural Studies

Students at the Tyabb Campus have the opportunity to participate in an Agricultural Studies program. The college has an area incorporating a barn, incubators, igloo, garden, paddocks, dam and pens.

We keep and maintain on a regular basis sheep, dairy calves, chickens, worms, ponies, plants and occasionally other agricultural livestock. Students learn about health and safety, incubation, breeding, raising and marketing of livestock and produce; sustainability, water conservation and recycling and general practices in Australian farming.

The older students set up and run their own enterprises. This involves planning, keeping records, budgeting, caring for their livestock or gardens, marketing the produce, relating the enterprise to real farming.

Year 9 students take part in a program sponsored by Dairy Australia called “Cows Create Careers”. They are given 2 or 3 young dairy calves to rear for a short period of time. They meet and hear from a dairy farmer, research this industry, and complete a number of written projects including ICT.

The Primary students are learning about animals in our society, caring for them, services they provide and produce acquired from them.

Agricultural studies provide enjoyable activities that broaden the students’ experiences and provide an outlet for physical energy in practical tasks as well as the academic pursuits of solving problems, conducting research and written tasks. Caring for livestock demands responsibility and commitment. The young people rise to this challenge developing individually as well as improving their cooperation skills as they work together.
