Recently the Year 8 Students of Carrum Downs enjoyed a Medieval Day as part of their History studies. Two of the students have written a report on their experience of Medieval Times.

‘On Wednesday 15th August, the Year Eight students took part in Medieval Day as a part of their study of medieval life in history. The fun day was filled with various activities including dancing, weapons and armour, and crime and punishment. Prizes were awarded for the best three costumes, and the teachers all agreed that it was a tough choice, with so many creative options to choose from. At lunch everyone joined in the feast of bread rolls, chicken, grapes and
juice, chatting about their interesting experiences so far. Highlights included sending fellow classmates and friends to the stocks, sword fighting (with fake swords of course), and dressing up in authentic armour. It was a fun and exciting day, with lots of new things learned, and on behalf of the year level, I would like to thank all the teachers for organising this for us.’

‘On Wednesday, 15^th August, the Year Eights celebrated Medieval Day.  There were many activities, such as:

1. Dance
2. Weapons and Armour
3. Heraldry
4. Troubadours
5. Crime and Punishment
6. Tournament

That was the order I did them, anyway!  My favourite was the tournament – we got to hit a man with a large sword.  Some of us got shields and some of us did not.  I also enjoyed Dance – this was a fun topic.  We learned a dance that the medieval people used to find their “true love”, as they would call it.  We also learned that if you were a girl and you did not find a husband, you had to marry one of your friends’ fathers (ewwwwwww). I had an awesome day.

At 12.45 (lunch time), we had a feast made up of chicken, bread, cheese and cordial.  After lunch we had a costume competition.  One of my close friends, Emily, won the competition (she looked really pretty in her mother’s wedding dress).  The others that also won the competition were Jason and Liam.

I had fun and I hope we can do something like this again.’
