Aaron has been playing volleyball since January 2011 after he became interested in the game while watching his sister play. He currently plays in the U15 boys team for the Warriors as part of the Moe Volleyball Tournament. He also plays for the Phoenix Rays in a mixed team.

Aaron reflected on his involvement in the Australian Volleyball Championships: “We played really well considering (height-wise) we were the smallest team. It was a good tournament and I learnt a lot from it”.

The Australian Government recognizes the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their National Capital as part of their civics and citizenship education. To help ease the financial costs for parents and guardians the  Australian Government contributed funding of $30 per eligible student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate Program. The contribution is paid directly to the College at the completion of the camp.

We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of this program. The students had a wonderful time learning more about their culture, Government and the National Capital.

Below is a report from a Year 6 student.

On Monday 4 March 2013, all of the Year 6 grade went to Canberra for camp, it took 8 hours to get there.

On Tuesday, we went to the Old Parliament house and into the Electoral Education Centre. We learned how to vote. After Parliament house we went to the National Portrait Gallery. We also went to the AIS (Australian Institute Of Sport) and had a tour at all the different buildings. In the Interactive Centre at the AIS we got to try out all the different sports like sprinting, long jump, wheelchair basketball and lots more. After AIS we went to the Cockington Green Gardens. Cockington Green Gardens is like a miniature world with beautiful models of different places around the world. The gardens were so beautiful! After dinner we went up to Mt Ainslie lookout, it was a beautiful sight of Canberra.

On Wednesday our first activity was Questacon. There was a massive slide there, called the Free Fall. It was funny when Mrs Lear went down, she screamed! Amy, Joy, Georgia and Carolyn went on a ride called 360, it was so scary watching them. Then we went to a science show. A guy from planet “Fway” was going to pour liquid Nitrogen on the earth and make the earth freeze. He did a cooking show and chose Amy to help. He got lettuce and onion and put it in the liquid Nitrogen, and then took it out and put it in a bowl, so Amy could smash it. After lunch we went to Canberra’s High Court and saw people debating about mining tax. We got told to bow at the judges, it felt like you were in presence of the Queen. Then came the War Memorial, when we got there we went into the Discovery Zone and got to experience what it was like in war. Then we went outside to the Last Post and remembered of all of brave people who defended our nation. It is sad to think of all the people we lost in the war.

On Thursday, we first went to the New Parliament House and had a tour of the Senate and the House of Representatives. I never thought Parliament House was so big. We learnt that the colours of the Senate and House of Representatives were green and red because of the bushland. Green represents the leaves and red represents bark and sticks.

Money, Money, Money! After lunch we went to the Royal Australian Mint, we saw how the mint makes mistakes; it was funny seeing some of the mistakes. We also saw $250,000 dollars getting poured into a barrel, the money was all 50^c coins. After dinner we went to the Telstra Tower, the lights of Canberra were amazing. It was so relaxing up there, I enjoyed it a lot.

On Friday, we packed the rest of our belongings and travelled home, those 8 hours again. I was so happy to see my family!”

After much consideration it has been decided that from the beginning of Term 3 The Bounty Shop will supply new uniforms directly to the Latrobe City campus.

With the exception of socks and ties, one size of each uniform item will be held at the College.  Students will be able to try on the sample uniforms to find the correct size.  An order will then be placed directly with The Bounty Shop and the orders filled and returned to Latrobe City. The Second Hand uniform shop will also continue to operate at the campus.

To manage the supply of uniforms efficiently we are advertising for a manager to operate the new uniform shop.  The manager will be responsible for assisting parents and students in finding the correct size, compiling and placing orders, sales and ensuring orders are received in a timely manner.  The successful applicant will receive a remuneration for this position. We expect to have the shop operating for two afternoons during the week from the beginning of Term 3. Opening hours and days will be confirmed later in Term 2.

On Thursday 2 May our Year 11 students caught a bus to Caulfield Racecourse to attend a Careers Expo. Many universities and tertiary institutions were represented with informative stalls and students were able to find out about the variety of courses on offer.

They were also able to gather:

• information and resources for the VCE

• information about university, TAFE and training courses

• career and study advice

• international exchange and gap year programs

It was a great day for the Year 11 students to start thinking about where they might want to go beyond Year 12 and they had many questions for the experts.

Year 12 Tertiary Information Service

On Thursday 9 May our Year 12 students went to Monash University, Gippsland to attend a session on how to apply for tertiary institutions through VTAC. Students learned about the different options available for them when they finish school and were also able to speak to representatives from institutions such as University of Ballarat, Australian Catholic University, Deakin University, Melbourne University and many more.

CSA Victorian Youth Breakfast

On Friday 10 May a selection of our VCE leaders had the opportunity to head to Wantirna for the Christian Schools Australia Youth Breakfast. Students had to get up VERY early to take a bus to Melbourne where they were treated to a delicious buffet breakfast where they were able to catch up with youth leaders from other Christian schools across Victoria.

VCE 2014 Expo

Coming up on 29 May we will be holding an interactive VCE Expo. This is a compulsory event for our current Year 10 students, although Year 9s are also invited to come along, especially if they are considering enrolling in a VCE subject in 2014. We invite parents and students to walk through stalls set up by our amazing team of VCE teachers and ask questions about subjects they may want to study in 2014. We will also have representatives from some of the local tertiary institutions such as Monash and GippsTAFE. Students will receive show bags which will contain helpful information about choosing subjects and courses. There will be a presentation by Miss Dortmans and Mr Hodges about how VCE works and what is unique to the VCE program at Flinders and a light supper will be provided. For our Year 10 students, we have Julian Van Tienan, an experienced VCE teacher from our Tyabb campus coming to speak with the students from 3:30-4:30pm about making decisions for their futures. They will be provided with dinner after the talk before the Expo starts at 5:30pm. We strongly encourage parents to access plenty of information about VCE for meaningful discussions with your children regarding their futures.

Mid-Year Examinations

Our Year 11 and 12 students will all be sitting mid-year Exams from Monday 17 until Thursday 20 June. For Year 11, these Exams will test them on all Unit 1 coursework and the grade will go towards their reports. For Year 12, it will help them to consolidate all Unit 3 work and practice within the formal setting for their end of year Exams, which contribute a large percentage of their final score for each subject. We believe the more practice students have in this environment, the better prepared they will be for this challenging time!

Footy Tipping Update

The SLC footy tipping ladder is currently being dominated by Year 11s, with Andrew Magaldi (aka Dolan Duck) our resident AFL expert in the lead after Round 7, on 48 points, equal on points with Chris Arbuthnot. Aaryan de Bruyn rounds out the top 3, followed by Ashlyn Neilson, then Daniel Grzegorczyn. Miss Dortmans is hanging in there in 6^th place, just happy to be beating Mr Hodges and Mr Dingey. Joel Richardson and “Bad Luck Brian” are both contenders for the wooden spoon.

Rehearsals have started for our school production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat. All the Primary students will be performing and are enjoying learning the music in class. The cast of Joseph, his Brothers, Pharoah and other characters are rehearsing on Monday nights. The dates of the performance are 29 and 30 August.

The Arthur Reed order forms have been sent home and should be completed online or alternatively returned to the student’s homeroom teacher together with the payment on or before Tuesday 28 May.

On photo day students will be required to wear the correct full winter uniform.  Please ensure school shoes are clean and polished, long hair tied back and Secondary students are wearing their blazers.  Student leaders, House Captains may also wear their badges.
