Gastroenteritis (gastro) is an illness triggered by the infection and inflammation of the digestive system. Symptoms include abdominal cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. Some of the causes include viruses, bacteria, bacterial toxins, parasites, particular chemicals and some drugs. The main complication of gastroenteritis is dehydration, but this can be prevented if the fluid lost in vomit and diarrhea is replaced.

Refer to http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au for more information.

Viral gastroenteritis

The recommended minimum exclusion periods for infectious conditions for schools, pre-schools and child care centres from the National Health and Medical Research Council is that children are to be excluded from school for 24 hours after the last loose bowel movement or vomiting.

On Friday 10th May, our Unit 1 Business Management students ran an Exo Day for their fellow students. Four of our Year 11′s have shared their experience below.

Exo Day was a great day, full of new experiences. We started the day early to set up the different activities and food stalls. The overall day was really busy, with everybody pitching in to make the day excellent and make sure that Years 3 to 10 would remember this Exo Day as the best Exo Day they have been to. Laura

Exo Day was a terrific success in many ways; it was a perfect example of mateship and hard work. There were plenty of activities for all year levels to enjoy. The year 11’s enjoyed organizing the event apart from getting to school at 7am! Thanks for everyone who lent us a hand. We couldn’t have done it without you Mrs Cole. We managed to raise close to $4000 in profit which we will be donating to a local family who needs some support, Beyond Blue and also The Royal Children’s Hospital. We hope that the school enjoyed the event as much as we did. Neel

We wanted different types of rides than the years before and we wanted everyone to have an enjoyable time on whatever ride they decided to go on. We are very excited about the amount of money we raised to donate to our chosen charities. Exo Day was overall a great, exciting and fun day for everyone involved. There were lots of fun activities that the children could do, from going to the animal farm and getting their face painted to bouncy boxing and mechanical bull. At lunch all the children came to watch some of the teachers wrestle it out in sumo suits, joining later on a bunch of the year 12 boyswhich was a great laugh. There were lots of yummy food from fairy floss and lollies to sausage rolls and donuts. Everyone had a great day, especially the ones running it. Zoe

Exo Day 2013 was a fantastic day for the Year 11 Business Management students and for everyone else who participated! The day turned out to be a massive success for everyone, with only the slushie machine not going the way we’d planned. Face Painting was a real hit amongst students, the mechanical bull was a great experience and all in all, the day was very enjoyable. To everyone that joined in this Exo Day, we’d like to thank you so much for your support and donations. We managed to bring in $3,500 for our charities, Beyond Blue, The Royal Children’s Hospital and a local family who has lost a parent recently. We are honoured to be able to give this money to these charities. Amy

Flinders entered a combined Year 7 and 8 boy’s team in the Saturday morning Dandenong Domestic Competition. This provided our Flinders boys with some tough games against some new teams they hadn’t played before.

The boys started the season off well winning the first 2 games by narrow margins, followed by a couple of big wins. Our first loss didn’t come until round 12, when we were beaten on the buzzer. We responded to that loss with 3 solid victories to finish the season.

We finished clear on top, and in our first semi-final we played a tenacious Rowville Rockets team who would did not surrender, despite the boys being in control for most of the game. Rowville finished the game with all the momentum and took the lead. With less than 2 mins to go, Darcey made a huge shot to get the boys back into the lead with less than 20 seconds to go. We won 34-32 and the team went straight through to the Grand Final game.

With a week rest, we faced a fired up Rowville in the grand final. Rowville were a much taller and older team and we knew we would have to be at our best to beat them. The boys saved their best game of the season for the grand final and we jumped to a 10 – 2 start. After that we were never really challenged for the lead. Rowville did fight back to only trail 14 – 7 at half time but we were in control of the game.

The Flinders boys completely dominated the 2nd half and we ran out winners 34 – 15. Darcey was our top scorer with 17 points followed by the support of Luke with 10 points. It was a great team effort with all 7 players contributing to a great win.

Darcey was awarded the League Top Scorer award. He was a massive 88 points ahead of 2nd place in the league. Luke and Bayde were also in the top 10.

The boys really deserved the success they had. They are a dedicated team that gave up 2 lunch times a week during the season to practice and they were always willing to push themselves and learn new things.

I would like to thank the school for supporting our first season in the Dandenong Domestic Competition, and also Julee Mate for assisting me and Marcelle Beard for team managing.

We have entered a new team for the upcoming season. We hope that the new team gets as much enjoyment and personal fulfillment as this past team did.

The Flinders players included: Darcey, Luke, Bayde, Bailey, James, Jakob, Kerrod and Matt.

Australian Maths Competition

This competition, occurring on Thursday August 1st is open to interested students. Permission forms have been handed out in class and are available from Mr Alley. They must be returned by Thursday May 17th.

Year 8 UTE Maths Assistance

We welcome Matt Woolnough who is assisting Year 8 maths students. As a recent graduate of Flinders, Matt is able to relate to and help students.

The following maths programs continue to run

After School Maths Program – Year 6-9

Mr Beissmann continues to run a free after school maths program for students in years 6 to 9 in F06 (the old plastics room) on Mondays and Fridays after school from 3:30pm to 4:20pm.
The main focus of the program will be:

Individualised work designed to extend, accelerate, catch-up and/or recovery maths

Develop thinking and creativity through problem solving and applications tasks

Building confidence and self esteem by fixing up gaps in understanding of mathematical concepts and achieving success by giving work that is at the student’s mathematical level

When appropriate, accelerate learning past the students expected year level

Attendance on both days is best as this would usually enable a student (depending on the situation) to catch up/move ahead 1 year within the year (with some students moving ahead by 2 or more years).
Please direct enquiries to Mr Beissmann Peter.Beissmann@flinders.vic.edu.au

After School Maths Program – Year 10-12

Mr Burford will be running an after school Maths Program for students in Year 10-12. This will take place in G12 on Wednesday Day 3 and Thursday Day 8.

Lunchtime Classes

Assistance
Mr Beissmann will also be running lunchtime classes for students seeking assistance in Maths in G12 on Monday and Wednesday lunchtime (for students in Years 10 to 12). These classes will be helping students with work they are doing in class.

Extension
Mr Burford will run an extension maths program called Archimedes Crew in G12. This is designed for students who really wish to develop their mathematical thinking with some different and unusual material. Stay tuned for details but likely to be Thursday lunch Day 8.

Calculators

Please contact Mr Alley, Chris.Alley@flinders.vic.edu.au if you have ordered but not received a Ti-Nspire calculator.
